Process of application: I applied by sending an email to them (arushiorg@gmail.com). I found this at their website. Within a few weeks I received a positive response from Sapna Gupta mam.

Duration: 4 weeks, 6 days a week.

First impression: Arushi
is a voluntary organization working for the upliftment of disabled
children. Apart from providing basic education and training in life
skills, the NGO also provides vocational training to them.
Everything here is barrier free, and
infrastructure is made in the style which would be liked by children.
There are various therapy centres like speech therapy etc.
-
Main tasks: The main
task was to work upon ‘Talking books’. Talking books are recording of
books in audio form for the visually impaired people. Audio books are
then converted into a CD which is given to the blind person at ‘No
profit no loss’ by charging bare minimum cost of CDs ranging from 10-15
Rs.
This work was very interesting and also
it was a social service for the needy which can improve their lives. I
also learned many new things by reading various books aloud for the
purpose of such recording.
Apart from this all interns at Arushi
were given task to analyze various types of disability, their causes,
symptoms, therapy and many.
We have done a survey in slum area,
middle class families and finally in upper class family to trace such
disable children and inform Arushi for their development and growth.
We researched on various disability acts
like National trust act 1999, Persons with Disability Act, RCI Act,
rights for disable in the human rights issued by UN.
-
Work environment: Work
environment was very friendly. We learned the basics of ‘Braille’. The
interaction with children suffering from various impairment like mental
retardation, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Down Syndrome, hearing impairment,
visually challenged was very good.
Each and every child has a desire to do
something, they are full of life and happy. We got to learn many things
about all such disability and crimes from Anamika Joshi madam who is a
physiotherapist.
Everyone lives here like a family. The infrastructure is ‘Barrier free’ so that disable people find it easy to walk through.
-
Best things: The best
thing is I have done some social and welfare work, by providing some
help to visually challenged children in their studies through ‘Talking
books’.
Also because of Arushi I could volunteer
the donation campaign organized in Ravindra bhavan on 12th May 2012,
where Famous singer Rekha bhardwaj performed with children of arushi
which boosted their moral.
I could meet a very famous photographer
Zishan akbar latif who also clicked the photographs of the movie ‘ 3
idiots’. These 2 personalities are working for Arushi from many years.
All the photographs for Arushi are clicked by Akbar Latif only and captions are written by Gulzar.
