Pursued both, i.e. Bachelor of Legislative Laws (LLB) and Company Secretary (CS), and now confused what should be professed as profession in India? As both of these degrees are profession and two professions cannot be practiced at once in India. Here is a perspective which may help you out in making a better choice for yourself.
It’s completely your own interest that comes into deciding whether you want to practice as a lawyer or CS.
Although, ‘CS degree’ is considered to be equivalent to ‘Post-Graduation’ degree and ‘LLB’ still just a ‘Graduation’. However, both are professionals.
The role of Company Secretary is limited to compliance. However, the role of lawyer knows no bound. Role of a company secretary is defined and limited. While, a lawyer, on the other hand, can practice in courts as an Advocate, can also appear before NCLT and work as a compliance officer or as a corporate lawyer in law firms or as in-house counsel for companies.
For lawyers, there are different, challenging and emerging aspects. New roles and responsibilities are coming into pictures with changing times. Like lawyer may also work as a law enforcement response team specialist (LERT Specialist), which is one of the latest aspects of this profession and help companies in complying with regulations relating to data protection and investigation of offences. Companies mostly dealing with protection of data like Tiktok, Facebook, Uber etc. have this role for lawyers. But such different and challenging profiles are not available for people practicing only as a Company Secretary.
The role of company secretary is classic, indispensable, necessary and routine. While, responsibilities and role of lawyers keeps changing with every job profile. Being a lawyer is like taking risks and adapting to new challenges every day. While, company secretary will become expertise in his area in just one year but then things starts becoming routine, because there is not much of change involves in work profile.
Now it is up to you, what you enjoy the most, new challenges and changes or expertise and routine.
